These men’s blogs I’m posting are being sent first as emails to all the men in our church and even though I’m directing them toward men I believe everyone can benefit from them. So they’ll be posted here (sometimes with minor changes) one week after the men have received them as emails.
“Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.” (Luke 2:52, NLT)
In this one sentence we see a clear framework for our own personal growth as men.
First, personal growth for men means growing in wisdom. “Growing in wisdom” means you never stop learning. It is a lifelong pursuit. You should continue growing in both “book smarts” and “common sense smarts.”
Think of it this way. Growing in wisdom during your lifetime means paying attention to your experiences.
Want a stronger mind? Live life and pay attention. Read (when’s the last time you read a book?). Listen (the Bible tells us to “be quick to listen and slow to speak”). Ask questions. Go places. See things. Take on projects and challenges.
Think more positively. Stop complaining. Tell yourself $19.99! (I’ll tell the story behind that in my next blog).
Jesus says, “But the words that come out of your mouth come from your heart. And they are what make you unfit to worship God. Out of your heart come evil thoughts, murder, unfaithfulness in marriage, vulgar deeds, stealing, telling lies, and insulting others. These are what make you unclean.” (Matthew 15:18-20, CEV)
When Jesus uses the word “heart” He’s referring to our thoughts and feelings which are different functions of our brains, but both originate in our minds. So when you’re melting down in anger or having an emotional outburst, think your way out by reminding yourself of what is really true regardless of how you feel.
I’ll be back next week to tell you about $19.99.
In the meantime order this book and read it: https://www.amazon.com/Life-Mastery-Discover-Timeless-Historys/dp/1459675126/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499808444&sr=8-1&keywords=Life+Mastery+Discover+the+timeless+secrets+found+in+history%27s+greatest+life+story – I’m not trying to sound crass, but if you need to, place it by the toilet and don’t just sit there, read!
